Art has long been recognized as a powerful tool for self expression, healing, and personal growth. In recent years, two related terms have gained popularity in the world of mental health and well being: "therapeutic art" and "art therapy." While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they are very distinct approaches to using art for therapeutic purposes.
Therapeutic Art is a Personal Expression of Creativity
Therapeutic art refers to using creative activities, such as painting, drawing, sculpting, or other forms of artistic expression, to promote emotional well being or self discovery. It is a self directed, process that allows individuals to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences through art. Therapeutic art can be pursued independently or guided by a Life Coach and is often used as a form of relaxation, stress relief, and personal insight. Some examples of therapeutic art is Zentangle, mandala coloring, art journalling, collage making, and vision boards.
Art Therapy is a Guided Healing Through Art
Art therapy, on the other hand, is a specialized form of mental health treatment conducted by a trained and credentialed art therapist. It involves the use of art making under the guidance of a licensed therapist to address specific psychological, emotional, or behavioural issues. Art therapists employ various art modalities to help individuals explore and understand their feelings, manage symptoms, and work towards therapeutic goals. Art therapy is often integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan and is utilized in clinical settings to support individuals facing challenges like trauma, depression, and anxiety. Benefits of Therapeutic Art and Art Therapy
Both therapeutic art and art therapy offer multiple benefits:
a) Stress Reduction: Engaging in creative activities, whether through therapeutic art or art therapy, can aid in reducing stress and promote relaxation.
b) Self-Expression: Art provides non-verbal means of expressing emotions and experiences that may be difficult to articulate verbally.
c). Emotional Release: The act of creating art can facilitate the release of pent up emotions and trauma, giving a sense of relief.
d) Self-Exploration: Both approaches encourage self reflection and self discovery, fostering greater self awareness.
e) Empowerment: Engaging in art can empower individuals to take an active role in their healing process and gain a sense of control over their emotions.
Therapeutic art and art therapy share common goals of promoting emotional well being and self expression, but they differ in terms of structure and professional guidance. Choosing between them depends on individual needs and preferences. Some may find solace and personal growth through the therapeutic art practices they pursue on their own, while others may benefit from the expertise and guidance of a licensed art therapist in a clinical setting. Ultimately, the path to healing and self discovery is a personal journey, and both therapeutic art and art therapy offer valuable tools to support that journey.
